Parents' shock after Melbourne mum pours tomato sauce over daughter's hair

A Melbourne mummy blogger has caused a stir on social media after posting an image of her squeezing a bottle of tomato sauce over her daughter's hair.

Jess Roberts, who blogs at Modern Day Mumma says she swears by the technique in summer, as it removes that green tinge chlorine pools leave behind in blonde locks.

"This is how every blonde finishes their summer holidays when growing up!" she captioned the image of squeezing sauce into her daughter's hair.

"Nothing like good old trusty tomato sauce to strip the green out!"

Many were shocked at the thought, saying they had turned to vinegar or lemon juice to strip out the green, rather than the very messy condiment.

"Never heard of it! My Mum used lemon juice or vinegar, which also doubles as a detangler," one follower wrote.

"Whaaaat?? Surely this is not a thing!" wrote another.

But it seems the hairstyling hack stacks up. Other mums, YouTubers and hair blog Hair Romance, have reported success.

Live Strong reports the hack can be put down to two reasons:  The red tomato colour helps to neutralise the green as the two colours oppose each other on the colour wheel, and also the acidity in tomato sauce cuts through the green oxidisation.

The key seems to be letting the tomato soak in for 10 to 20 minutes, as you would a hair mask.
