RECIPE: PECS - the coffee cocktail which doubles as a fitness drink

If you love an espresso martini, but don't love to ruin your progress in the gym, this one is for you.

PECS (Protein Enriched Coffee Solution) was released onto the New Zealand market last year after two years of development at the University of Auckland: An instant coffee mix that boasts 35 percent protein.

Now the creators and the mixologists at Seaside Auckland have teamed up to create a cocktail from it: the perfect summer 'pro-tini'.

Recipe:

You will need:

  • 1 coupe glass
  • 2 boston shakers

Ingredients:

  • 30ml PECS coffee
  • 30ml kahula
  • 30ml vanilla vodka
  • 120ml cream
  • 15ml Simple Syrup
  • Ground nutmeg or PECS coffee for garnish

Method:

Step 1: Level coupe glass with ice to chill.

Step 2: Add PECS coffee, Kahlua and vanilla vodka to boston shaker and level with ice. Shake until chilled and double strain into pre-chilled coupe glass.

Step 3: Add Simple Syrup and cream to clean boston shaker and shake. Add to coupe glass to thicken the top layer of the cocktail.

Top with ground nutmeg or sprinkle over some ground coffee. Yummo.

This is one cocktail you can create to impress guests, but it's not the only fitness drink on the market.

The Bachelor's Naz Khanjani released vodka-based fitness drink 'Ketonic' late last year, and pre-mixed mojito brand 'Clean Collective' launched in New Zealand last year; a mix of triple distilled vodka, and flavoured sparkling natural water.
