Woman outraged after 'rude' man refuses to pay for $180 lobster, wine on first date

A man's account of a terrible first date has sparked an online debate over who should've footed the bill.

Reddit user CuteBananaMuffin uploaded his story to Reddit in a post which has been widely shared, showcasing a message exchange he says occured after he didn't offer to pay for his date's dinner - which included lobster and a €70 (NZ$130) bottle of wine.

The post, captioned 'Well... There goes the friendship with her', begins with a screenshot of the man asking the woman on another date. Her response was "after what you did last time, you expect me to go out with you again? Wow."

When the man asked what he'd done, the woman replied that he made her pay for her own food and drink, while he only paid for his.

In the ensuing messages, the man protests that he only got pasta and a beer, while she ordered up large.

"My food was €17.50 (NZ$29.76), while yours was €110 ($187.00)," he wrote. "You were really expecting me to pay that? I'm a student, not your sugar daddy."

The man also pointed out that the woman invited him on the date, and that she was "lucky you didn't pay for my food too".

The woman was not impressed, calling him "so rude".

"I'm never going out with you ever again, if you can't pay for a girl's food then why accept the invite... gentlemen ALWAYS pay for girl's food, but I guess you are gay," she wrote.

The conversation ended with her calling him a "f**king a**hole".

CuteBananaMuffin's story has triggered other Reddit users into debating whether men should be expected to pay for dinner on dates with women. However, as it's not 1965, most people seemed to agree the woman was in the wrong.

"Basically, this girl asked him out, orders an expensive meal, and expects to eat for free. Her perception of dating is completely ass-backwards. Dude dodged an expensive bullet," one person wrote.

Another shared their own story, saying they had been similarly burned.

"We had a nice modest first date, then she wanted to go out to a nicer place on the second date. Long story short, I got a $15 pork chop with a water and she got a $52 steak and a $100 bottle of wine," he recounted.

Another said: "That's incredibly obnoxious. Going out solely for the free lobster! Gives women a bad name."

The poster anonymously told BoredPanda he knew things were bad when the bill came to the table.

"She was shocked that I let her pay. She didn't say anything at the time, but from her facial expression, I realised she was furious," he said.

"I usually pay for both sides when it comes to the bill, but I'm a student and I work 60 hours a week to pay for food, books etc, so I obviously couldn't afford to pay 110 euros for her food.

"I asked her out again to apologise pretty much for the previous time, hoping we can go to a cheaper place so I could make up for it - but as you can see, the result was really bad."
