A list of Meghan Markle's food and diet secrets

As she comes into the final weeks of her pregnancy, Meghan Markle is certainly no stranger to the spotlight. But as the most-Googled person in the world last year, many want to know the secrets behind the Duchess' energy and glow - even while carrying around that baby bump.

The California native has previously revealed she has refreshing approach to eating well and exercising, saying it's about prioritising her overall health and mental wellbeing (not just staying slim).

We've compiled some of the hints Markle has let slip about her wellness regime (before she was a royal of course). Here's how to live like Megs!

She chooses green juice over coffee

While most people rely on chocolate or coffee to get through the afternoon (guilty), Markle takes a different approach.

"Green juice is a food-as-medicine philosophy for me," she told Delish before her life as royal.  "I think trying to go for coffee or things like that only end up hurting you in the end."

Markle says she sips on green juice and kombucha in the afternoon to get her through long hours (once acting, now royal engagements). She says they're a "really good natural source of energy... that gets right into your system as a nice pick-me-up."

"If I blend some apple, kale, spinach, lemon and ginger in my Vitamix in the morning and bring it to work, I always find that sipping on that is a much better boost than a cup of espresso... the end of the day, your body will thank you for nourishing it with so much fresh goodness."

She eats vegan during the week

"I try to eat vegan during the week and then have a little bit more flexibility with what I dig into on the weekends," she told Best Health magazine in 2015. "But at the same time, it's all about balance. Because I work out the way I do, I don't ever want to feel deprived. I feel that the second you do that is when you start to binge on things. It's not a diet; it's lifestyle eating."

We know that the Duchess loves pasta, sharing her "sexy" zucchini pasta recipe with Dish a few years ago. The zucchini bolognaise cooks for around four hours until the zucchini falls apart and creates a super creamy sauce, without the need for cream or butter.

"It will be mushy, and that's good!" the recipe notes.

But then she splashes out on weekends

Markle told Delish that when she was filming Suits in Canada she developed a love of poutine (fries covered in gravy and cheese curds) and beaver tails (funnel cakes made in the shape of beaver tails and smothered with toppings like caramel, chocolate, and/or cinnamon).

"French fries - I could eat French fries all day," she once told Best Health. "And I love pasta. I love carbs - who doesn't love a carbohydrate?"

She also loves macaroni and cheese.  "I throw some frozen peas into it and have this gooey, simple, childlike meal," she told Best Health.  "I used to cook it for the kids I would babysit and I always enjoyed feeling like a kid and eating it with them," she said. "I'm also not averse to eating tater tots. With ketchup and sriracha."

She loves a glass of wine

The Duchess probably hasn't been drinking so much while pregnant, but she loves a glass of red wine.  The lifestyle blog she closed in 2018 was named The Tig, after her favourite Italian wine Tignanello.

Meghan previously told Best Health: "Of course I'm going to have that glass of wine - it's delicious and I enjoy it. Do the things you enjoy within reason. Know your body and what works for you and you'll be fine."

Markle is expected to give birth next month.
