Behind the scenes: New Westfield mall in Auckland's Newmarket

Auckland shopping enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the opening of the new Westfield Newmarket won't have long to wait, with the first part due to open as early as mid-2019.

Set to be the largest shopping mall in the country, the complex will boast 230 shops with 2800 carparks, breathing new life into the slightly dilapidated Broadway shopping precinct.

Several acclaimed Australian outlets are set to open in a first for Kiwis shoppers, including interior concept store Coco Republic, which offers quality furniture, homewares and design services.

Acclaimed Australian bohemian luxury fashion label Camilla will have its first Kiwi branch, and many will also be anticipating the opening of upmarket Aussie department store David Jones.

The $790 million Auckland mega-mall will also boast a restaurant and bar hub for foodies, including a double story White + Wong's with cocktail bar.

Rooftop gin garden Something & Social along with the fifth outlet of chicken eatery Bird On A Wire are also confirmed.

For food shoppers, there will be a large Countdown supermarket and Asian food-mart Tai Ping.

During a tour of the developing construction site yesterday, Scentre Group chief operating officer Greg Miles said they're proud to be "actually opening on time", with Kiwi favourite Farmers one of the first outlets to open around mid-year.

While public interest has been high, Miles said they're their "own harshest critics", and their team has been working at full speed to guarantee a timely opening.

"It's a very complex project and it wouldn’t be possible to open all the stores in one day so we're going to break it down in chunks," he said.

Miles couldn't confirm the floating rumours of interest from luxury outlets like Louis Vuitton, but did say there's been international interest in the mega-mall.
