If you've always dreamed of bringing your pet dog along with you to the movies, then finally your chance has come.

An event scheduled in Auckland next month offers dog owners the opportunity to snuggle down with man (and woman's) best friend to enjoy the movie "Secret Life of Pets 2".

Organiser Caitlyn Coulston, co-founder of Fur Child Supply Co, says the idea for such an event came to her a while back when she went out at the movies.

"A couple of months ago, I was sitting and waiting at the movies with my partner and I said 'oh my gosh, this would be a great idea if we could bring our dogs to the movies'," Coulston told Stuff.

After having the brainwave she got in touch with around 20 cinemas asking if anyone would be keen to host a human and dog screening session.

"The majority of them – well, all of them – said 'no' and a few of them were like 'hell no'," she said.

Finally Academy Cinemas in Auckland were open to the idea and a date was set for August 17.

People can either let their pets lie at their feet or get them a seat to themselves, she said.

The event's page says all dogs must be well socialised and able to handle a busy indoor event. They must also be on a lead at all times.

Tickets to the event cost $20 with all proceeds going to the SPCA.
