The dancing inspiration you need if you 'can’t dance'

If you're anything like me, two left feet means dancing is reserved for the clubs on a weekend (where it's usually dark) or the privacy of my own living room.

It's always been something I've wanted to do, and as a kid I longed to be a ballet dancer, but never had the confidence (or the skill-set).

But with talented New Zealanders bringing dancing to the world stage the makers of Kiwi snacks - Bluebird is trying to make dancing something anyone can enjoy, including left-footed baboons like me.

Enter Chippy, the computer generated, chip-loving, dancing penguin who's bringing some pretty sweet moves into the living room.

Chippy's moves were choreographed by the talented Kayla Paige from Momentum Productions who worked closely with the Bluebird team to come up with seven dance moves.

"We met Chippy the Bluebird penguin a few months back… we used penguins for a little bit of inspiration and that's the dance you see on TV now," she told Newshub.

"A mix of some cool hip hop moves, some funky disco and a little bit of penguin in there as well."

Paige says even though we often see Kiwis excelling in dancing on a world stage, even the most inexperienced of us shouldn't feel like we 'can't dance'.

"If it makes you feel good, you should just get into it… it doesn't matter how experienced you are, just have fun with it," she says.

Bluebird marketing manager Patricia da Silva echoes these sentiments.

"Bluebird has always had a Kiwiana connection and history with dancing penguins, and the latest dance is for everyone to enjoy.

"Our inspiration is teaching people who aren’t confident dancers to learn some awesome moves so they can show off their new skills to friends and family. The intent is to bring out the inner penguin in all of us, so whatever your dance level and experience is, you’ll be able to do Chippy’s dance," da Silva said.

If you want to have a go yourself, here are the seven moves that make up Chippy's iconic grooving. Watch the video above to see me give it my best attempt!
