Kitchens have changed a lot over the years and recently this once purely practical space has become the focal point of the home and for very good reason. It’s the one room that brings people together at the start of the day or after a long day away.

It’s hardly surprising that kitchen styling is taking centre stage more than ever before.

One of the trends at the forefront of kitchen design is a return to darker and arguably warmer and more inviting spaces.

After years of wall-to-wall minimalist white, kitchens are going back to black with dark cabinetry and dark stainless appliances leading the charge.

While white kitchens will always remain eternally classic, their popularity is decreasing and being replaced by bolder spaces that reflect the changing role the kitchen now plays in most of our homes.

The new centre-of-the-home deserves to be paraded and this is driving the desire for statement colours including dark brown, black and navy.

The dark tones create a dramatic and luxurious feel to a kitchen and this bold colour palette creates the perfect setting for gorgeous new dark stainless appliances like the recently launched collection from Electrolux which includes everything from opulent French door refrigerators to dishwashers and ovens.

Besides being ultra sleek and stylish, dark stainless boasts some practical pros too. For starters it’s almost completely fingerprint proof.

In fact, it’s arguably the most family-friendly option because it’s less prone to smudging than traditional stainless. It also doesn’t require any special products to keep it looking great which makes it especially low maintenance.

Of course like regular stainless steel, it’s also durable and resists rust, corrosion and staining making it a great choice for high-traffic areas.

If your kitchen is currently white then dark stainless contrasts beautifully adding a stylish monochromatic statement in one of the most important rooms in your home.

It also dovetails in well with another trend enjoying a rebirth - industrial chic. The subtle sheen of black stainless pairs seamlessly alongside traditional stainless and gives a nod to popular open-plan, New York loft-inspired homes.

If the idea of a dark kitchen design makes you nervous then it may be time for a rethink.

A dark kitchen, complete with modern dark stainless appliances, adds something special to a home that a white kitchen simply can’t – a level of sophistication and a sleek and stylish space for the whole family to enjoy.
