Couple under fire for feeding hippo blue watermelon for gender reveal

Gender reveals - often cringe at best and life-threatening at worst. Who can forget such iconic moments as a car spewing blue smoke on Australia's Gold Coast, or the 2017 gender reveal 'explosion' which ignited a 47,000 acre wildfire?

But amazingly, a new reveal has been dubbed the worst of all time after a Texas couple enlisted the help of a Pygmy hippo at their local zoo.

Austin couple Jonathan and Bridgette Joseph originally posted the video to their Tik Tok feed.

Filmmaker Ana Breton then posted the video to on Twitter, where it's racked up over 140,000 likes and 27,000 shares.

"I did it. I found the worst gender reveal," she captioned the Tweet.

Others expressed similar feelings about the hippo being roped in.

"That person's baby is not remotely important enough to feed a hippo 10 pounds of food colouring," wrote one user.

"The joy on his face knowing it's going to be a boy is simply the worst. Along with making a hippo behind a gated fence eating a food colouring watermelon," wrote another.

But the zoo has leapt to the defence of the couple, saying it was all done safely, and they often give the hippos watermelons with different-flavoured jelly inside as a treat.

"This is the same Jell-O people feed their kids. It's totally harmless," zoo director Michael Hicks told the New York Post, adding that the hippo wasn't forced into the reveal.

"You can't make a hippo do anything. He weighs 4,000 pounds," he said. "He enjoyed it as much as anybody else did."
