Adorable photographs of a boy and his 90-year-old great-grandparents as characters from the Disney film Up have gone viral.

On Tuesday, Colorado woman Rachel Perman posted a series of images to Facebook showing her son Elijah and her "wonderfully willing" grandparents dressing up as characters from Up.

Sharing the images on her photography Facebook page, Perman said this year she had decided for each of her children's birthdays, they would do thematic photo sessions.

The photos show Elijah as wilderness explorer Russell and the grandparents as elderly couple Carl and Ellie Fredricksen.

Elijah can be seen holding a bunch of balloons with a house tied to the bottom, resembling the iconic scene from the film where Russell and Carl fly away in a house floated by thousands of balloons.

"What a fun time and wonderful photos to commemorate Elijah's favourite thing! I am so glad Elijah will have these special photos to treasure with his Great Grandparents!" Perman wrote.

The images have received thousands of reactions and hundreds of shares.

"Your story is amazing, your kids are amazing, and your photos are amazing!" wrote one person. "I love this so much! I'm crying because this movie makes me cry and my grandparents are no longer living and it makes me miss them," said another.

Perman told PEOPLE that Elijah is obsessed with Up.

"It's the only thing he draws and colours — the house with balloons — the only books he wants to get at the library, and the only toy he wanted when we were in Walt Disney World last year."

Perman also shared images she took of her daughter Emilee dressed as a princess with a horse with a unicorn horn.
