A US woman has shared a heartbreaking photo of her daughter comforting her son, referencing the boy's cancer battle in an emotional social media post.

Alongside a photo of four-year-old Beckett Burge leaning over a toilet, with five-year-old daughter Aubrey's hand on his back to comfort him, mum Kaitlin says her daughter has always supported and taken care of him.

The Texas woman took the opportunity to show the world her son's childhood cancer struggle.

"One thing they don't tell you about childhood cancer is that it affects the entire family," she wrote.

"My two kids, 15 months apart, went from playing in school and at home together to sitting in a cold hospital room together."

The woman wrote of how her daughter didn't fully understand what was happening to her brother.

"She spent a fair amount of time, by his side in the bathroom, while he got sick. She stuck by him.

"This is childhood cancer, take it or leave it."
