Facebook is launching a new dating feature to help connect online friends in more ways than one.

If you've been consistently dropping hearts on someone's uploads or "LOL-ing" at their unfunny taste in memes, the new Facebook Dating app could be for you.

The 'Secret Crush' feature allows users to "match" with Facebook friends they fancy. A maximum of nine friends can be selected as potential dates - meaning there's no awkward exchanges with people you accidentally swiped right on.

If a crush is also using Facebook Dating, they'll receive a notification saying they've been picked as a 'Secret Crush'. If they select you as a crush in return, both parties will be notified of the match.

"People have told us that they believe there is an opportunity to explore potential romantic relationships within their own extended circle of friends," Facebook said in a statement.

"If you choose to use Secret Crush, you can select up to nine of your Facebook friends who you want to express interest in."

For those worried that their unrequited high school crush will realise you're still in love with them six years later, never fear - if the person doesn't pick you as a Secret Crush, they will never get notified they've been selected - meaning you can continue admiring from afar.

The Facebook Dating app is currently available in 19 countries and is set to be released in the US this year.
