A tattoo design by a New Zealand man of "spot knives" on a stove has gone viral.

Rob Kemp from Napier designed the tattoo showing a stove heating up the knives. The "hot knives" are used to consume cannabis, in a method otherwise known as "spotting".

Kemp told NZME he was surprised his design had gone viral after it was posted to the Arkay Tattooer Facebook page.

The photo shows two women with matching "spot" tattoo designs. It instantly attracted attention on social media, with many confused about what it was.

"What is this? Knives and heaters?" one Facebook user asked.

"Will someone explain what this means," another wrote.

Others knew exactly what the design represented.

"The handy dandy spot machine," another person commented.

"Man I miss those times."
