With many of our public holidays lost to pandemic lockdown this year, you really have to celebrate the small wins when you can.

Doughnut lovers around the country will know the first Friday of June is always National Doughnut Day - a time to celebrate all things doughy and fried.

If you're looking to celebrate with some delicious sweet treats, bakeries throughout the country are on board to help.

Auckland bakery Pie Piper is running a doughnut scavenger hunt throughout the city on Friday to celebrate.

Clue-hunters will have to check out their website and social media pages to track down the team handing out delicious, handmade doughnuts.

For fans of international doughnut giant Krispy Kreme, it will be a month-long celebration. The store is giving away a free doughnut of choice every Friday in June with the purchase of any dozen.

Retail manager of Krispy Kreme NZ Antonio River says it's because things are "looking a little different this year".

"We [decided] to spread the joy far and wide and allow our customers to enjoy free doughnuts on us, at their own pace."

Meanwhile supermarket doughnut brand Original Foods Baking Co is giving away 1000 doughnuts nationwide, by gifting 10 not-for-profit organisations 100 each. The community can submit their favourite groups and charities who've had it tough during lockdown on the company's website.

"There is simply no sugar-coating the fact that National Donut Day is our favourite day of the year," says CEO Anthony Honeybone.

Don't go easy on the sprinkles!
