Kanye West's latest fashion footwear offering has drawn criticism from online commentators, who have dubbed his new Foam Runners "a joke".

The new Yeezy shoe was revealed by the rapper and designer on his Twitter, where it wasn't long before it was compared to a "microwaved Croc", a washing basket and Freddy Kruger's face.

The sculptural design features many cut-outs, and is all one piece with no laces, designed to be slipped on by the wearer.

"I thought this was a joke when I saw the concept but holy shit that's dumb," one reply on Twitter read.

"They look like bionicle feet," said another.

"Ye I love you but hun this is not a smart investment," offered a third.

Other comments claimed the shoe looked like a velociraptor skull or a bicycle helmet.

Despite the backlash, West's Foam Runners sold out just a couple of hours after they became available online, with a price point of US$75.

West also announced a collaboration with American clothing chain Gap, which will see a 'Yeezy Gap' range hit stores early next year.
