The internet has been left reeling from one woman's too-nuts-to-be-true tale of how she was fooled into breastfeeding her neighbour's baby.

The woman posted on popular sub-Reddit 'Am I the Asshole' asking for advice over what she claims was a mix up that led to an uncomfortable situation.

The 28-year-old woman says it all started when a new neighbour moved in next door with his five-month-old baby.

She wrote she had two-year-old and was trying to ween them off breastfeeding when struck up a friendship with her new neighbour, who led her to believe his child's mother was not around - and had possibly passed.

"When I asked about the baby's mother, I assumed she was out of the picture because he replied with 'she's not gonna be here'," the woman wrote.

"One day, after finding out I was still breastfeeding my daughter, he asked me if I could also breastfeed his kid because he was concerned about formula and wanted his kid to be strong.

"I thought it was kinda weird but I agreed, mostly because I took pity on him.

"He really didn't seem to know what he was doing with the baby and I thought that maybe I could help at least somewhat."

The mum says she started breastfeeding her neighbour's child on a regular basis.

But it all came to a head one unfortunate day when the child's real mother showed up.

"I was taken aback because my neighbour shut down every conversation about this woman and had very vague answers," the woman wrote.

"I didn't bother him more about it because it seemed like a sour topic. They're split but had some custody agreement that I don't know the details to."

The woman said the baby's real mother "blew up" at her - probably unsurprisingly.

"She said that I was a sick person to 'let some random baby suck up my bodily fluids' and I wanted to destroy her bonding with the baby and alienate her from her baby.

"Even after I explained that I thought she wasn't present, she said that something weird must be going on in my head because it doesn't justify breastfeeding someone else's baby and you should never do that.

"Was I in the wrong?" the mother ended the post.

Commenters were split over the insane tale, with some backing the mother's actions, and others finding them strange and even revolting.

"In my opinion, breastfeeding a stranger's baby without the mother's permission crosses a line," one person wrote.

"It's not like you gave the baby a bottle or changed a diaper once to help out.

"Breastfeeding is something really personal, emotional and intimate and if I was a mother I'd be furious if some stranger had breastfed my child without my permission."

Others pointed out it perhaps wasn't the breast milk that was the issue, but the feeding.

"It's not easy to introduce a breast to a bottle-fed baby, and there's always a risk the baby will start rejecting the bottle. Absolutely no reason she couldn't have pumped."

There were also, of course, commenters who doubted the validity of the entire bizarre story.

"There's absolutely no way this is real," wrote one disbelieving commenter.

"And if it is... that poor child."
