DIY do-up: The simple changes to freshen up your bathroom

Thanks to multiple lockdowns throughout the COVID pandemic, many of us have spent long hours indoors taking stock of our homes' interior and making over our various spaces.

Sadly, one area that tends not to get a look in when it comes to renovating and redecorating is one we use often - the bathroom.

Whether you're rushing in and out to get ready in the morning, trying to wrangle the kids into bathtime, or even snatching a few minutes alone to do your skincare - the bathroom can take a beating, meaning the fittings often leave a lot to be desired.

But thanks to all the tiles and tapware, it can be an intimidating space to risk a DIY disaster.

Luckily now with a little creativity and the power of adhesives, it only takes a few small changes to make a major difference - no costly tradespeople or tools like drills, nails, or screws required.

The first task is to update your fittings. Outdated or tired fittings can really bring down a space, making it appear older than it really is. By swapping them out with fresh new toilet roll holders, towel rails and tapware options, your bathroom will be given a new lease of life.

If you don't want to touch drills or clamps, use a product like Selleys Hold Up, an adhesive that sticks almost anything and instantly holds even on vertical surfaces* - perfect for freshening up the bathroom and ensuite.

I used it to replace my outdated, wonky toilet roll holder in my own bathroom and the whole space was instantly lifted. Trust me when I say if I can manage it, it's beginner-level difficulty.

Just heed the number one top tip from experts: when you're moving fittings, make sure your towel rails and toilet roll holders are in the right position. You should be able to grab your towels when you step out of the shower and easily reach the toilet paper when you're sitting down on the loo.

Next, add more storage. If your bathroom is cluttered with bottles, jars and higgelty-pigglety piles of makeup, it's time to start using the space more effectively.

Use Selleys Hold Up to install shelving with a solid backing (to give the glue something to adhere to). Attached flush to the wall, these look stylish and can be used to keep jars of makeup brushes, face flannels, cotton wool buds and any other bathroom paraphernalia. Add a candle or succulent to turn them from merely functional into aesthetically pleasing.

While you're there, use Selleys Hold Up to mount some extra towel racks and hooks, draping them with fluffy white towels to really complete that heavenly, spa-like feeling.

Now relax, pop on some music and a sheet mask, and enjoy taking some time out for yourself in your newly revamped bathroom.

*Note: Selleys Hold Up is not suitable for some plastics PE, PP, PTFE, or some rubbers. For heavy objects, overhead application, and with non-porous materials such as glass & metals, it is recommended that additional supports (eg. clamps) are used during cure as a precaution. Holds instantly but must not be disturbed until cured (at least 48 hours).
