With the weather getting hotter many Kiwis will have had an influx of new, unwelcome visitors into their homes - flies.

You might have turned to the big guns like an automatic spray dispenser or an electric fly swatter to get rid of the pests, but every year they seem to return, less deterred than ever.

They're not just annoying. As they spend their time buzzing around such germ havens as rubbish bins and animal carcasses, they're often loaded with germs and disease - not ideal when they're landing on your barbecue.

But one old-school trick for getting rid of them has had a resurgence on Facebook and it's so successful, people are dubbing it "witchcraft".

One woman wrote in the Facebook group 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips' that filling a plastic baggie with water and a few coins - like 10c or 20c pieces - and hanging it above an open window or door is key.

She said she hasn't "seen a fly for weeks" since trying the hack, while another said it worked like magic.

"I have no idea how or why this utter witchcraft works, but it does!" one person wrote.

"We live on a working farm and two days ago were being driven nuts by big buzzy flies, put this up and they have literally vanished. Not even dead on window sills just vanished!" another person shared.

The reason why the trick is so successful is unclear but some people think it's because the light reflecting off the coins is dizzying to the flies.
