An icon of Wellington's nightlife is closing its doors, saying border closures have removed its strongest customer base.

Danger Danger (formally Electric Avenue) has been a mainstay of the capital's clubbing scene for nearly 17 years - but on Wednesday it announced it will be closing its doors permanently.

In a post on social media, the bar said it was time to move on.

"With backpackers being our stable market for so many years and the borders closed for so long, we feel the time is right to move on. Thank you to everyone who has partied with us over the years."

The bar's final night will be September 11.

The announcement has broken the hearts of hundreds of Wellingtonians who are mourning the loss of one of the cities most infamous clubs.

"Have partied there for a long time, sad to hear it's closing," wrote one woman.

"That's it. Town is officially closed," said another.
