Aucklanders are going to extreme lengths to be at the front of the queue for their KFC fix when COVID-19 alert levels drop on Tuesday night - with some seemingly willing to camp out the night to get it.

A video posted on TikTok shows a small tent set up outside one Auckland KFC restaurant, said to be in Papakura.

"People camping out waiting for KFC to open tomorrow," the woman filming the video says. "Bring on level 3!"

Takeaway stores and all other non-essential businesses have been closed in Auckland since the super city entered a COVID-19 alert level 4 lockdown last month.

But restrictions will ease to level 3 at 11:59pm, meaning food outlets can reopen for contactless takeaways, click and collect, and delivery.

And if 2020 is anything to go by, takeaway outlets are in for a busy day on Wednesday. When New Zealand's first alert level 4 lockdown eased to level 3 last year, restaurants faced an onslaught of customers as Kiwis queued early for their fast food fix.

On Monday, two gang associates who couldn't wait until Wednesday for their fix were arrested with a car boot full of KFC trying to enter Auckland from Waikato.
