Palmerston North hairdresser apologises, gives refund and free product to man whose 'girl' hair was cut short against wishes

A Palmerston North man says he's received an apology and some free product from a salon after a hairdresser refused to give him the cut he wanted because it was a "girl's style".

Jacob Lister went to the Palmerston North salon for a trim at the weekend but was told he wasn't getting what he wanted because he'd "look like a girl".

The hairdresser proceeded to cut his hair much shorter, against his wishes.

After going public about the issue, Lister said he's received an apology, a refund and some free product from the salon in question, Just Cuts.

"I have got in touch with Just Cuts," he told The AM Show.

"Every other staff member that I've talked to has been really really awesome, really supportive, super apologetic - obviously there's not a lot you really can do but everything they can do they have done.

"I definitely got a refund and they offered me some free product and vouchers and stuff like that."

Lister said he wanted to share the story to start a conversation.

"It's the principle - I genuinely think that if I was a female and I'd asked for my haircut, I would not have walked out with the haircut that I have."

In a statement, Just Cuts said it was disappointed to hear of Lister's experience and a review was underway.

"We were extremely disappointed to hear about this client’s experience," Just Cuts said.

"Fortunately, this is a rare occurrence but we take this matter very seriously and are now also reviewing what happened to result in this client not getting the style cut that was asked for."

While unhappy with his experience, Lister wanted to make it clear he wasn't blaming Just Cuts.

"I think it's a lot more constructive to highlight the situation and let other people talk about it at home," he told The AM Show.

Lister said he plans to grow his hair long again.
