A supermarket in the UK is helping shoppers save money by showing them what items can be stored in the freezer.

Sainsbury's has created a walk-in freezer pop-up store that holds food generally outside of the freezer section, to let customers know of the fresh food they can freeze.

The 'Sainsfreeze' has frozen foods in revolutionary ways, from mixing wilting herbs with oil or water and freezing them into ice cube trays, to portioning mince meat and freezing them flat to save space, the Daily Mail reported.

It comes after the supermarket chain decided to remove best before dates on 276 products to help customers learn when products will go off on their own in a bid to help reduce food waste.

According to waste charity WRAP, the average UK family wastes £60 (NZD $114.23) a month throwing away food.

"We are launching Sainsfreeze to help customers try and combat food waste and learn handy hints and top tips along the way. Innovative freezing not only allows us to save food we would otherwise have thrown away but also to buy reduced-priced food close to its use-by date, saving even more money on the weekly grocery bill," director of corporate responsibility and sustainability at Sainbury's Ruth Cranston said.

The pop-up shop opened in east London on Wednesday (local time) and will be open until Friday (local time).

Everything from the pop-up store will also be given away for free.
