The most popular dog names in Auckland have been released, along with the rarest dog breeds in the super city.

The most common name for female dogs in Auckland is Bella with a whopping 1539 dogs sharing this name.

The name Charlie has taken the cake as the most popular name for male dogs with 1035 furry friends bearing the moniker. 

Here is the list of the ten most popular male dog names and female dog names in Tāmaki Makaurau:

"Aucklanders love their dogs. Each year we're always delighted to see what the most popular dog names and breeds are and finding out what the region's rarest breeds are, some of which you might never have heard of," Auckland Council's manager of Auckland animal management  Elly Waitoa said.

The region is also home to a variety of rare dog breeds. Here is the list of the rarest breeds living in Tāmaki Makaurau:

  • Bergamasco shepherd
  • Bluetick coonhound
  • Bolognese
  • Eurasier
  • Glen of Imaal terrier
  • Great Swiss mountain dog
  • Icelandic sheepdog
  • Otterhound
  • Pyrenean mastiff
  • Redbone coonhound
  • Russian toy
  • Treeing walker coonhound.

Auckland Council's annual report also revealed the most popular dog breeds in Auckland. Labrador retriever was the most common breed, the Staffordshire bull terrier was the second most popular, and the border collie came in third.
