Australian woman divides internet after putting engagement ring on Facebook Marketplace

An Australian woman has divided the internet after putting her engagement ring up for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

The woman listed the AU$23,600 (NZ$26,743) Tiffany's engagement ring for AU$18,500 (NZ$20,963) on the private Facebook group High End.

In the caption, the woman wrote: "Selling this for obvious reasons. I do now I don't. Compare to current Tiffany pricing of a 1.0 carat ring at $23,600, I am letting go of this beauty at $18,500. Condition is close to brand new - never worn much."

Daily Mail Australia reported the commentators became argumentative over whether or not the woman had the legal right to sell the ring.

"Legally you can't sell this and have to give it back if you didn't proceed with the marriage," one woman commented.

Another agreed and commented: "'If he paid for it, it's his and he should get all the $$$."

Others came to the seller's defence when they said it's not anyone's business who legally owns the ring.

"OMG, why do [people] feel the need to comment on this? You don't know the circumstances. If you don't want to buy it, why bother adding your two cents?" one person wrote.

Another person agreed the woman didn't need unsolicited legal advice.

"Comes here to sell a ring, gets legal advice instead," one said while another commented: "Tries to sell a ring, everyone turns into a lawyer."

It is unclear whether the person selling the ring was engaged or married.
