What does SYSCA founder Lucy Blakiston think about 3.5m people hanging on her every word?

It's the go-to news source for millions of people around the world, but it's not on a TV channel or even a news site.

More than 3.6 million humans across the globe trust a Kiwi-run Instagram page to tell them the Shit You Should Care About (SYSCA).

The New Zealand production is hugely popular in the United States, which makes up half of its audience. The rest is split between the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

And it's not just an Instagram - there's also a daily newsletter and two different podcasts. But SYSCA founder Lucy Blakiston is having a blast.

"It's such a blessing to be able to do this job, and I get to do it with my two best friends," she told The Project. "It's friends first, business second  - or news second - which keeps us grounded."

Nearly 60,000 read the daily newsletter, hundreds of thousands listen to the podcasts, and millions follow the Instagram account. What does Blakiston think about all those ears and eyeballs hanging on their every word?

"You can't. Or you just wouldn't be able to say anything," Blakiston said. "I just have to just think, 'No. It's going to me. My family will read it'. I just can't think about that too much."

And now creators Lucy, Ruby, and Olivia are bringing their mash-up of news and pop culture to a town near you.

"We're going to get a camper van and start in Auckland and head down to Dunedin," Blakiston told The Project. "And it's going to be real full circle because, you know, we started in a lecture theatre because we didn't understand the world and now we're coming back to lecture theatres, understanding the world and helping other people."

However, they've got only one rule on the road: "Unless we're desperate, no toilet use. We can find a public toilet."
