An American woman living in New Zealand has shared her confusion after discovering the word 'baubles' while doing her Christmas shopping.

In a TikTok video, Madi Gemmell filmed herself shopping at Kmart when she stumbled across a packet of baubles; the round-shaped ornaments used to decorate Christmas trees.

"I don't think I have ever heard this word before. That should say ornaments. What is this word?" Gemmell said while pointing to the baubles.

"Do you guys say this or do you say ornaments for tree decorations?"

In another video, Gemmell explained she had moved to Aotearoa to live with her husband.

Several people commented on her video explaining how the word 'baubles' was commonly used in many different countries, not just New Zealand.

"I'm from Ireland and they're always known as baubles," one said.

"I'm in the UK and we say baubles sometimes too," another commented, with a third adding: "In Australia, we say that."

Many people also addressed Gemmell's pronunciation of the word, with one writing:  "Baubles! It's pronounced 'boarballs'."

Another said: "Round ball-type things are baubles - 'bore-bulls'."
