The United Kingdom's top food regulator has gone viral for her take on bringing cakes to the office.

Susan Jebb, also an Oxford University professor, says bringing cakes to work is as bad as second-hand smoking.

While she agreed that the issues were not the same, she said they had similar outcomes.

Jebb is now calling on office workers to be more responsible with their own personal health, and that of their colleagues.

She told The Times she wouldn't normally eat cake during the day, "But because people do bring them in, I eat them. Now okay, I have made a choice, but people were making a choice to go into a smoky pub."

Jebb implied it was easier to be the victim of poor health if the conditions were right.

"With smoking after a very long time, we have got to a place where we understand that individuals need to make some effort but that we can make their efforts more successful by having a supportive environment."

The professor added, "We all like to think we're rational, intelligent, educated people who make informed choices the whole time and we undervalue the impact of environment. But we still don't feel like that about food."
