A supermarket giveaway for Mother's Day has been labelled "misogynistic" for offering household cleaning products as the prize.

Pak'nSave Porirua was promoting a prize pack for three lucky mums to celebrate Mother's Day on the branch's Facebook page.

The "pamper packs" contained laundry liquid, laundry freshener, air fresheners, and a box of Roses chocolates.

A screenshot of the Facebook post - which has since been deleted - was later shared to Reddit, where it was quickly slammed for its "misogynistic" undertones.

"What every mum wants to pamper herself with! Thanks Pak'nSave," one wrote, with another adding: "I've always said you can't go wrong with a nice tea towel. Maybe with some dishwashing liquid and a brush to round it out."

A third person quipped: "Mmmm, housecleaning products and bad chocolate, just what she's been dreaming of."

Cory Ross, the employee behind the giveaway, told the New Zealand Herald that the criticism was "ridiculous."

"There was absolutely no intention there - it's not about 'mums doing laundry'," he said.

However, Foodstuffs -  which owns Pak'nSave and New World stores around the motu - was apologetic.

"This Mother's Day post doesn't reflect the views of Pak'nSave, Stickman or Foodstuffs," said Foodstuffs spokesperson Emma Wooster.

"We've had a chat to Cory, who's in charge of giveaways at Pak'nSave Porirua this week and he genuinely thought he was doing something nice for the store's Facebook community - but sadly missed the mark with this particular promo."

She added that Ross has been told why the post didn't strike the right tone, noting that the Porirua team has promised to lift their game.

"Happy Mother's Day for Sunday to all the amazing mums out there and sorry for any offence that's been caused," Wooster said.
