A knitting group in Napier had holes poked in their Tuesday night plans after a local bar made them feel so unwelcome, they cancelled their booking.

The Knit Knook booked a table for 12 at Good George Napier Taphouse for a social night of eating, drinking and knitting together.

But the group has since expressed their dismay on Facebook after the bar allegedly called to discourage them from attending that evening. The manager reportedly said: "Knitting is not the vibe we are going for."

"If someone brought a deck of cards or a board game it would be seen as normal... but because of their perception of who should be in a tap house, we are not welcome to knit there, so I cancelled our bookings," the Knit Knook said on Facebook.

Good George Napier Taphouse issued an apology on Monday, saying it didn't intend to offend the knitters.

"We have a few large groups in tomorrow, so we really didn't think it was the right space for knitting. If there was dinner to be had by the group, then we could've booked a space for them in an area but from what we were told it was just a drink and knitting and we only had bar stools available," they explained.

The Knit Knook said it is looking for another location: meanwhile, the bar said it has reached out to the group and is awaiting its reply.
