Noah, Charlotte: New Zealand's most popular baby names for 2023 revealed

It's that time again: the most popular baby names of the past year have been unveiled, with two classics taking out the top spots.

On Wednesday, Te Tari Taiwhenua Department of Internal Affairs announced the annual list of the most common monikers in Aotearoa for 2023, showcasing the names that have proved popular among New Zealand parents and indicating trends in forenames for the year ahead.

Noah took out the top spot for boys, while Charlotte was the number one name among newborn girls.

Oliver was trumped in the top spot for the first time in 10 years, having previously held the number one position since 2013. Charlotte, meanwhile, came in third last year, beaten by Isla and Amelia respectively; now, Amelia ranks in second place, followed by Isla in third. Charlotte, Isla and Amelia were also the top three for 2021.

The Department registered 18,666 different first names in 2023, given to a total of 57,889 babies. In 2022 there were 59,711 births registered in New Zealand with a total of 18,041 different forenames.

As in 2023, the top Māori names will be released around the time of Matariki.

"Naming a child is one of the greatest gifts any parent can give, and we know that much time and thought is given to this important milestone," Russell Burnard, the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages, said on Wednesday.

The information for the most popular names is gathered from SmartStart, a website that provides new and expectant parents with step-by-step information and support to help them access the right services for their family. Through SmartStart, new parents are also able to apply to receive Best Start payments.

"SmartStart is not just a platform; it is a testament to our commitment to supporting New Zealanders as parents. Registering your child is an important first step in their life, and SmartStart is a free, fast, and an easy way to do it," Burnard said.

By registering your baby in New Zealand, you are ensuring they have a legal name and can access important government services as they grow up.
