Australian supermarket chain Woolworths has come under fire for its attempt to make a commemorative cake for Thursday's Anzac Day.

Reddit user CornaCMD uploaded the picture of a chocolate mudcake with its version of the 'Lest We Forget' message from the day - but the image showed the message as saying 'Lets We Forget' instead.

It is reported the cake was a one-off and not sold widely across Woolworths stores around Australia.

However, while many turned in a series of food-related puns for the gaffe, a few raised concerns the company should not be commercialising the Anzac Day commemorations in any shape or form.

"Even without the typo the whole idea is tacky," one Reddit user wrote.

"Even if it was spelt right, it's pretty tasteless to sell ANZAC day-themed mudcakes," another agreed.

"Nothing celebrates the Anzacs like a cheap ass mudcake," another said.

"There's no reason for a special edition ANZAC day woolies mudcake to exist, yet here we are," another wrote.

In Australia, the Woolworths chain annually raised money for the Anzac appeal. 2024 marked the 10th anniversary of the supermarket's commitment to the cause, raising more than A$13 million for the cause.

"The RSL (Returned & Services League) and Woolworths have an ongoing and valued partnership, providing ongoing support to veterans and their families across Australia," RSL Victoria CEO, Sue Cattermole, said in a statement to news.com.au.

"Over the last 10 years, Woolworths has raised more than $13 million during both our ANZAC and Poppy Appeals by making badges available for purchase in stores, providing direct and crucial support to the veteran community nationwide."
