In the realm of consumer technology, Samsung is one of the foremost pioneers. This year the Korean tech company has taken big steps in transforming artificial intelligence from a curious novelty into a powerful set of tools that enhance day-to-day life.
The recent One UI 6.1 update to the Galaxy Tab S9 range brings with it a number of helpful features powered by the revolutionary Galaxy AI introduced this year with the S24 range of mobile phones.
Galaxy AI is already being used to supercharge productivity with smartphones - but what does it bring to the tablet experience?
Dane Lowson, Samsung NZ's Product Manager - NC Business, spoke with us to delve into Galaxy AI on the Tab S9.
Unleash your creativity
Editing photos and videos on your Galaxy Tab S9 is drastically enhanced with Galaxy AI.
It's easier than ever to polish photos with Edit Suggestion, which will remove unwanted blur, reflections and other imperfections instantly. Then there's Generative Edit which can easily resize, reposition or realign objects in photos - or remove them altogether and have the background fill in the gap.
"Photo editing is beneficial on a tablet over a phone because of the bigger screen," said Lowson.
"The way it lays it out, you can split the screen in 3 to view in multiscreen, so it's easier to edit on a tablet from the UI point of view. I'm using the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra with a 14.6-inch screen which is just a beast. There's so much screen real estate for moving things around, even in splitscreen where you have another app open at the same time."
Empower your communication
"Chat Assist is a game-changer, the translating is amazing," said Lowson.
"Whether it's a text, WhatsApp or other supported app, I just tap on translate and it will translate even all of my past messages into Chinese, German or other language I’ve chosen to download.”
You can use your own language in these apps and it will convert it to any of the 13 different languages currently available dynamically as you type, and vice versa.
Chat Assist can also suggest from a spectrum of tones, from professional to casual, making sure you are communicating as you should be. It will even write social media captions for you to help make your posts zing.
Enhance your productivity
Note Assist, Browsing Assist and Transcript Assist are three tools set to save you a whole lot of time.
"Using the Samsung Internet Browser, you can push a button and a really long, long webpage or document will be instantly summarised and bullet-pointed for you," said Lowson.
"If you take long notes with the voice recorder, it can transcribe those and then format them and summarise them for you - even translate them too."
As these tools work on-device, you don't need the internet to use them, which means you could be organising and preparing for a work meeting or presentation while flying on a plane without on-board Wi-Fi.
Circle to Search with Google
This feature on Samsung devices means you can touch anything on your Galaxy Tab S9's screen and automatically search it.
"It's really useful for me," said Lowson, emphasising how useful it is for shopping - or at least getting an idea of the price of anything you're looking at online. It's so powerful it may even cause problems, he jokingly added.
"I actually got into trouble with a friend - I went round to her house and she said she had done this painting and put it on her wall," said Lowson
"I pointed my Tablet's camera at it, used Circle to Search and a whole bunch of other paintings popped up on the screen very similar to the one she said she had composed. She wasn't very happy with me."
