New Zealand's primary industries sector is in for a boost with the opening today of a purified carbon dioxide plant at Marsden Point.

The $40 million BOC plant purifies carbon dioxide that's produced as a byproduct of oil refining operations.

The aim is to supply the product to a range of industries including dairy, meat, horticulture and viticulture.

Purified carbon dioxide is often used to chill and preserve materials.

The plant has the capacity to produce over 50,000 tonnes of the gas each year.
