When it comes to food, one in four Kiwis say there's nothing more comforting than a pie.

The classic steak and cheese was the clear favourite, with 27 percent making it their top pick.

Customer satisfaction research company Canstar Blue surveyed 1360 pie eaters and discovered some interesting habits.

More than half of the country see pies as a treat food (53 percent), but three percent say that they eat a pie for lunch most days.

One in six know that pies are bad for them but say they can't stop eating them.

We're divided over sweet or savoury, with just over half favouring a fruit pie.

But most agree on one thing -- quality, with over 90 percent favouring a gourmet pie.

And 16 percent say no savoury pie is complete without a bit of tomato sauce.

Consumers were also asked to rate their pies, with iconic Kiwi brand I Love Pies coming out on top.
