The three cities of Auckland, Los Angeles and Guangzhou are forging business and political links at a summit.
Auckland Mayor Len Brown is hosting the Tripartite Economic Summit on Monday and Tuesday at the Viaduct Events Centre.
The first summit was held last year in Los Angeles.
More than 700 politicians and business people are attending the Auckland event, the theme of which is "making connections, providing opportunities for collaboration, investment and establishing joint venture partnerships".
The three cities signed an alliance in November 2014 in Guangzhou that aims to help them create jobs and enhance trade, investment and economic opportunities.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, President of Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries Madam Li Xiaolin, Guangzhou Vice-Mayor Wang Dong, and New Zealand government ministers are among those attending.
"This is a great opportunity to showcase Auckland and its innovative businesses," Mr Brown said.
