Field Days has helped give the sales of new cars another boost.

The Motor Industry Association says vehicle sales rose five percent last month compared to June of last year.

It was the strongest June on record for sales of commercial vehicles, with 4,513 vehicles sold.

New passenger registrations totalled 9,186.

MIA Chief Executive Officer David Crawford says Field Days was a factor in the strong sales numbers.

"Those distributors that attended the annual Field Days reported healthy demand for new vehicles. Other factors that are key drivers of new vehicles are record levels of net immigration, healthy trade sector and strong business confidence."

The Ford Ranger was the top selling commercial vehicle for June, taking 19 percent market share (836 units). It was also the top selling model overall last month. The Toyota Hilux was the second best selling commercial vehicle (811 units), while the Holden Colorado (410 units) took third spot.

The top three selling passenger vehicles were all SUVs, with the Toyota Highlander (414 units) taking the top spot and five percent market share. It was followed by the Toyota RAV4 (396 units) and the Kia Sportage (316 units).

The MIA says total sales for the year are up by 5.3 percent. There have been 69,057 registrations, compared to 65,653 at this time last year.
