MediaWorks has appointed current board director Jack Matthews as its new chairman.

Mr Matthews will take up the position at the end of September. He will take over from Rod McGeoch, who has been chairman since 2013.

"I'm very pleased to accept this position and look forward to working with a strong board, management team and, most importantly, a committed and passionate staff who are all focused on maintaining MediaWorks as a successful and important part of New Zealanders' daily lives," says Mr Matthews.

Mr McGeoch says his time at MediaWorks has been "incredibly rewarding", particularly leading the company out of receivership "and into a place where MediaWorks radio is number one and TV3 is gaining share".

Prior to joining the MediaWorks board, Mr Matthews held executive roles at Fairfax Metro Media (Australia), Jupiter Programming (Japan), Showtime (Australia) and TelstraSaturn (NZ).

He currently sits on the board of Crown Fibre Holdings, Network For Learning, Trilogy International and APN Outdoor, and chairs Rewardle Holdings, a digital start-up based in Melbourne.

From October 1, the MediaWorks board will be comprised of Jack Matthews (chairman), Jonas Mitzschke, Paul Lockey, Julie Christie and CEO Michael Anderson.
