The Meatworkers Union has been blindsided by the closure of Silver Fern Farms' coldstore in Christchurch.
The 28 workers affected by the proposal -- announced today -- will be offered options at other plants.
But local union secretary Bill Watt thinks they will be cold comfort.
"One of them is 180km away, and the other one is probably 90km, so I don't think it's that feasible to be honest. But some people may take it up."
Silver Fern plans to upgrade the coldstore facilities at its Pareora plant, south of Timaru, where it is also relocating its Christchurch venison processing plant.
