Wellington Airport has put on hold resource consent plans for a controversial $300 million runway extension.

The airport wanted to add an extra 355m to its runway by reclaiming land from the coastal marine area at Lyall Bay, in an effort to attract long-haul flights from Asia and the US.

An airport spokesman says the plan is just "on pause for a couple of weeks".

He said it's all about due diligence as there have been more than 700 submissions and this is the final stage before it goes to the Environment Court, so they want to make sure everything is in order.

The airport denied the delay meant the plan had hit turbulence.
