Monkey business: Forget Apple, here's the Banana Phone

  • 08/05/2017

Tired of talking on your Apple iPhone? How about swapping it for a banana?

A campaign for a Bluetooth-enabled Banana Phone is currently underway on crowdfunding website Indiegogo.

The fruit-shaped phone, which can be pre-ordered for US$40 (NZ$57.81), won't allow you to forgo your current phone. Instead, it will connect to your smartphone and send your calls to the Banana Phone.

According to the Indiegogo campaign, the phone will likely be available in September 2017.

It's likely to appeal to nostalgic Millennials, with the concept first popularised by children's singer Raffi in 1994, in the song 'Bananaphone'.

The phone's creators say 1 percent of all sales will go to Gearing Up 4 Gorillas, a UK charity which helps gorillas in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The phone's makers have so far raised more than half of their US$30,000 goal.
