Price war on flights to LA heats up

We were told it was coming - and now we're seeing the benefits increased competition has had on New Zealand's international airfares.

The introduction of American Airlines to our shores a year ago has pushed prices lower and lower, as airlines jostle for the same customer base.

This morning, Flight Centre released return flights to Los Angeles for just $799 on American Airlines - but this afternoon, Air New Zealand played hardball when they released flights on the same route for just $749 return.

While there are restrictions on when one has to fly to get the deal - you'll have to wait until well after the US summer comes to an end - it's certainly an offer that will interest budding travellers on a budget.

The earliest travel dates on both deals are from October 8, returning before the 30th - and travellers are also able to jetset to the US just before Christmas and return as early as January 16.

The sale comes to a close at 9pm on Friday, August 11 - so Flight Centre is urging globetrotters to get in quick to snag the deal.

All flights are exclusively between international airports in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch and LAX.

International travel costs have fallen to record lows in recent times, with STA Travel offering return flights to London earlier this year for $979 per person. Air New Zealand's Grabaseat deals back in May also saw travellers fly to Hawaii and the Pacific Islands for well under the standard fare.

Flight Centre's cheapest airfare to Los Angeles in August 2013 was $1669 - more than double what it is now.
