Booking years in advance is likely to become the new norm for Kiwis who want to holiday at their favourite spots.

International passenger arrivals are set to hit record highs, with more than 6 million arriving in the year to July.

Tourism Aotearoa Industry chief executive Chris Roberts says infrastructure is lagging well behind rising demand.

"The popular holiday spots are well-booked out. Many of New Zealanders' favourite holiday spots are booked out a year or two years ahead."

Mr Roberts says it's too late for many Kiwis to consider last-minute holidays this upcoming break.

"The growth of tourism that we're seeing brings enormous benefits to every part of New Zealand, but it certainly brings with it challenges as well. What we don't is anyone not being able to enjoy their summer holiday."
