A supermarket worker has saved an 88-year-old woman from falling victim to a $1200 iTunes scam.
Staff became concerned when the pensioner entered the Havelock North New World last week to buy a $1200 iTunes gift card, Stuff reports.
Police were called, when it soon emerged the woman had been called by an Auckland-based scammer telling her she had $6000 of unclaimed pension.
The scammer asked her to provide her bank details as well as send the gift card so she could receive a payout.
According to Stuff, the elderly woman's bank accounts were immediately frozen and her cards cancelled as a precaution.
A similar scam has been reported in Gisborne and other parts of the country.
