Upper Hutt Waitomo shocks fuel competitors in Wellington region

Waitomo Group opened an unmanned station in Upper Hutt at midday on Tuesday and are marking the occasion with an opening price of $1.899 per litre for their Unleaded 91 fuel.

The low-cost provider is the first of its kind in the greater Wellington region with fellow price-cutters Gull yet to open a station there.

Waitomo's discounted price of 91 octane means that people living in Wellington itself are paying at least 34c more per litre than those in Upper Hutt.

According to fuel-comparison app Gaspy, the cheapest available price in the Wellington City region as of Tuesday afternoon is BP 2go Brooklyn at $2.239 per litre.

That price is 11c per litre more than the cheapest station in Auckland, even accounting for its 10c per litre regional fuel tax.

Gull Atiamuri, widely considered to be the cheapest petrol station in the country, is offering its 91 octane at $1.928 per litre on Tuesday.

Waitomo Group says it is determined to help Wellingtonians save money on fuel and this station is just the first step of a wider plan.

"As the region's only low-cost operator, our entry brings much-needed competition and choice to the capital, where Kiwis have been paying some of New Zealand's highest fuel prices," Waitomo said in a statement.

"As part of our national network expansion plans, we will open a second Wellington site in Tinakori by mid-July."

Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce president John Milford told Newshub the market needs this.

"If it means that you're shaving some cents off of the cost of doing business then that goes towards you even making more of profit, so you're making an investment or growing your business."

Fuel prices have been rising across the country in recent months due to seasonal trends in commodity prices, geopolitical tensions, a falling Kiwi dollar and a rise in the official cash rate.

However, the price differences between major cities across New Zealand vary wildly, with no consistent base in price point.
