Businesses say coronavirus will impact across New Zealand

New Zealand retailers are being urged not to panic as concern grows about the potential impact coronavirus may have on business.

Meanwhile, China looks like it could be off the itinerary for Kiwi travellers for a while, if an expo on Sunday is anything to go by.

Retailers that service the tourism market are expected to be the first to feel the impact of coronavirus, but today thousands flooded the travel expo in Christchurch.

"I think we're tracking exactly like we would any other year," Flight Centre regional leader Danny Bodger told Newshub.

There were plenty of cheap deals on offer and competitions to be entered, but this year, China was off the table.

"We just have to be a little bit flexible and nimble with this side of things," Bodger told Newshub.

"As info is given to us we can make some decisions around that side of things but we don't want to shut off travel to people who want to travel."

Meanwhile, Kiwi retailers say the impact is likely to be felt across the board.

"At this stage, there's no need to panic about products coming into the country," says Retail NZ chief executive Greg Harford.

"The situation is still very fluid, very uncertain. We need to see how long the shut-down in China is going to last for before we can be really clear about the impact that can be."

Larger businesses which have a well-established supply in and out of China are considering alternative solutions.

"Those that source product from China know there's gonna be some delays in getting product from China and potentially they won't be able to access it at all," Harford says.

Access to China is a problem for both travellers and retailers - but the travellers at least have other options.
