Coronavirus pandemic: People selling COVID-19 supplies on Trade Me at hyper inflated prices

There's calls for Trade Me to ban people from selling products like hand sanitiser at hyper inflated prices.

The online auction site has seen products being sold far above their regular retail price including a half-litre bottle of sanitiser for nearly $100.

Jessica Wilson from Consumer New Zealand says the traders are preying on people when fears are running high about the Covid-19 pandemic.

She says Trade Me should take a hard line and stamp it out.

Her advice to consumers, "Don't buy into it. You're better off going to the supermarket and buying yourself a cheap bar of soap and using that to wash your hands".

Trade Me says it's currently reviewing the status of whether hand sanitisers and face masks can be sold on the site.
