Sky Television chief executive Martin Stewart is resigning after less than two years in the role.

Stewart said the likelihood of ongoing border restrictions led him to step down so he can return to his home in the United Kingdom.

Sky TV chairperson Philip Bowman said the company's chief customer officer, Sophie Moloney, has been promoted to the top job, effective immediately.

Moloney is the first woman to lead the company.
