A US woman on the hunt for a job found herself landing an interview after she replied to a rejection email.

TikTok user Carly had been applying for several jobs but until now had no luck getting through to the interview phase.

But when she saw another rejection email join the rest in her inbox, she decided to respond to the recruiter with an amusing meme.

"I just got another rejection letter from a job I applied for and I really wanted this job," she said in a TikTok video.

"So I took a lesson from Gen Z and I sent them back this."

The meme Carly sent showed a famous painting of Pope Leo X by Colombian artist Fernando Botero with the caption 'y tho' (why though).

And Carly's humorous response worked.

"Anyway it worked, they sent me another email saying they do in fact want to interview me, I can't believe that worked!"

Other TikTok users have weighed in on her move, some of which are recruiters.

"If someone sent that to me. I would absolutely want an interview."

"If someone sent this to me, I'd try and find you another position," said another.

"I hired someone who answered 'becuase I kind of like to eat' under 'why do want this job?' question on the job app."

Another person said "Gen Z has mastered how to IDGAF [I don’t give a f***] their way to success.

"It’s like magic to me I can’t fathom how they got the guts."
