Thousands of insurance claims filed as Aucklanders begin clean up for devastating floods

The country's largest insurer is battling to keep up with a record-breaking number of claims after Auckland was devastated by catastrophic flooding.

IAG, which owns AMI and State, has had around 10,000 claims since Friday for homes, vehicles and businesses which were damaged in the flooding.

IAG Chief executive Amanda Whiting told AM on Wednesday she expects the number to keep rising over the coming days.

"We still have people returning to homes etc and letting us know, so it will get bigger than that," Whiting told AM's Melissa Chan-Green.

She said IAG is working to get money to customers quickly so they can begin repairing their homes.

Whiting added it's important people don't panic because they will get to everyone it just might take some time.

"Please don’t panic. We’re here to pay claims, that’s what we do, and we are used to dealing with big events like this so we’ll get to you," she said.

Whiting said the company will prioritize claims for people who are needing emergency repairs.

It comes after the city was devastated by flooding, heavy rain and slips over the past few days.

An eye-watering 24.5 centimetres of rain fell on Auckland in the course of 24 hours from Friday morning to Saturday morning, shattering the previous record for Auckland's wettest day.

The flooding saw 78 buildings red stickered and 319 yellow stickered.
