Someone in Lower Hutt will be celebrating today after claiming the $24.25 million Powerball prize sold at Wainuiomata's Woolworths last week.

The winning numbers were drawn on October 7, and after an eager wait for residents of the small town, the money has been claimed.

Head of corporate communications Lucy Fullarton said on Tuesday that Lotto NZ is delighted for the winner and pleased to have the prize safely claimed.

"We don't have any further details to give at this stage, but we will have more to share over the next few days," Fullarton said.

The massive prize is made up of $24 million from Powerball first division and $250,000 from Lotto first division.

This is the 12th Powerball win of 2023, including a $37.125m win in August for a lucky couple in Kāpiti, and a $33.5m win for another couple in Christchurch.

It comes after Lower Hutt locals spoke with Newshub on Sunday, in the lead-up to the money being claimed, sharing their imaginative thoughts on what they would do if they won.

"I'd make a street, like those new communities they're making, I'll make one for my family," one girl said.

"I'd go on a trip overseas for a starter, I'd go on a cruise," one man said.

"Buy a house, buy a car, probably put some in the bank," another added.
